Now more than ever I think is an amazing time to start a garden.!! It is such a fulfilling hobby that almost anyone can do. They have actually done studies that showed that gardening can do wonders for your mental health, easing anxiety, depression and just generally lifting your spirits. Its been proven that people that walked for 90 minutes in a nature filled area with plants and trees had amazing changes in their brain. More specifically the subgenual prefrontal cortex, the brain region thats most active during rumination, (which is the act of thinking over and over about something you may be upset about) decreased among the people who walked in nature versus those who walked in the city. Now thats amazing.!! I know from personal experience that ruminating can be very taxing on the spirit and well being. So when it comes to your new garden, don't give up and remember to enjoy the process.!! Lets get to it: So In the beginning it can seem to be a bit of task getting everything together and wondering how to start so here's a list of things you can do to get started the right way..!!
#1. Find the "Spot"
Location is extremely important when it comes to the success of your plants.. You want to make sure its in a sunny area thats sunny for at least 5 hours. Some plants don't need as much sun and these are called shade plants. You just need to do some research based on what your planting to figure out how much sun your specific plants will need and then find a spot accordingly.
#2. Figure out the platform.
If you are gardening in the earth, your going to need a shovel to dig holes to put your plants in. Make sure the hole is as deep as the roots if your replanting something you got out of a pot. When you go to replant make sure to gently loosen the dirt thats surrounds the roots and then blend the dirt thats surrounding the roots into the hole. Then cover up the hole with about 1/4 cup of rich organic fertilizer.
If you are planting seeds then dig a hole that is deep enough for when the roots start growing they have room to expand. You can dig the hole about 6 inches down.
Make sure you are planting either in a place where you can keep an eye on them so you won't forget to water them in case your busy taking on other gardening tasks. Make sure to water the seedlings with a mister instead of a watering can or hose so they won't get over watered which can happen very easily.
If your using a raised bed for your gardening, then make sure your using good rich soil. Then estimate a few inches apart from each spot your going to plant in. The best way to arrange them are in rows, depending on how big your bed is the row number of spots will differ. Pour the seeds in the holes and pour in 1/4 cup of fertilizer and then pour the rich soil in the hole.
#3. Let them listen to music.!!
After you make sure they are all planted in rich soil and watered correctly, I would recommend letting them listen to music and party on a little bit.!! Studies have shown they really do like it. Music like classical, jazz and sometimes metal ( which is kinda funny) depending on the plant of course can really cheer them up. This is the fun part, it will be cool to see which plants will thrive based on what music you give them.
